Beach holidays in Sri Lanka – that’s what you need to know
Most travelers combine a Sri Lanka tour with bathing/beach days or a diving or surfing holiday. In addition to choosing the right beach for your travel time, you also need to consider the following:
A beach holiday on the south or west coast is a good option for the end (or beginning) of the trip, as it is easy to get to the airport from the south or west coast (and vice versa). A beach holiday on the east coast of Sri Lanka is best integrated into the tour, so that the beach holiday does not take place at the end but somewhere in between. This way you can avoid the long drive from the east coast to the airport.
But which is the right beach for you? Unfortunately, this question is not that easy to answer. Basically, you need to know that there are not very many beaches in Sri Lanka where swimming in the sea is possible. Many beaches have high waves, strong currents or offshore reefs that make swimming in the sea impossible. However, since many beautiful hotels are also located on such beach sections, such beaches should not be excluded from a beach holiday. It usually only takes a short walk or a short tuk-tuk ride to reach a good stretch of beach for swimming.
So that you ultimately end up on your personal dream beach, it is important that you think about your preferences before you start looking for a beach or hotel: Would you prefer a quiet beach with few people (but also few places to go out and eat) or would you rather Something busier with lots of bars, restaurants and shops? Would you also like to surf, dive or snorkel during your bathing days or is it enough for you to simply read a good book in a hammock? Fighting your way through the multitude of options alone is quite difficult!
